Bearkat Baseball will face Rice to begin the NCAA Regionals
|
by Andrew Muller (90.5 Sports)
Sam Houston State's coach Mark Johnson is now 3-for-3 in getting the Bearkats into the NCAA Regionals. The Hall of Fame coach who is nearing 1000 wins all-time will bring his team to Reckling Park in Houston, TX this weekend where they will be the four seed in a double elimination format. They first meet the Rice Owls.
Going into the SLC tournament as the seven seed, the Bearkats did not hesitate to 'turn it on' when needed. They eliminated the second seeded Lions of Southeastern Louisiana, beating them twice. A team that swept the Bearkats in the regular season. They also took out UTSA on a walk-off home run by senior catcher Mark Wyatt.
Led by seniors Nick Zaleski and Mark Wyatt, plus key pitching from freshman Sean Weatherford and sophomore Matt Shelton, the team set themselves up with a date with top seeded Texas State-San Marcos in the championship game. Mixing in a lengthy rain delay, the Bearkats took down the Bobcats, 7-1 who also made it into the tournament as a two-seed in the Austin region.
Also apart of the Houston regional hosted by Rice University include Kansas State, a quick team that went 27-5 outside the Big 12 and Xavier, the winners of the Atlantic 10 conference tournament and is 8-2 in their last 10 games.
This is the second straight year the Bearkats have faced Rice to begin play in the NCAA Regionals, they lost 3-2 to open the Redional in 2008.
You can hear Friday's game on Bearkat Vision on the SHSU Bearkats Athletic Website.

Bearkat softball drops two at home to the Cougars
by Andrew Muller (90.5 Sports)
In a doubleheader delayed a day by rain, the Houston Cougars travel up to Huntsville and take both games from the Bearkats by scores of 3-2 in 8 innings and 3-1.
The Bearkats got off to a good start in the first game. A Morgan Mikulin home run in the third inning was all the offense until the sixth when the Cougars tied it up on an unearned run. In the eighth inning, Houston went ahead on a two RBI double by Haley Valis. Catcher Casie Everitt's RBI single cut into the Cougar lead, but it was not enough.
In game 2, Laurie Wagner doubles in the first and third innings drove in runs which proved to be enough for the Cougars to take the second game. Hailey Wiginton had an RBI on a 2-for-4 performance in game 2. Morgan Mikulin pitched game 2 allowing six hits, striking out five.
Softball drops their record to 14-17 on the season. They will travel to Texas-Arlinton for a three game Conference series against the Mavericks on Saturday and Sunday.
